The Photo That Made Me Stare

Okay, take a second. Can you actually find the gecko here?

When I first saw this photo, I honestly thought it was just a picture of some mossy bark. I scrolled past, then scrolled back up because my brain felt like it was missing something. It’s one of those images you have to really look at, and then all at once, the shape just appears. That little eye gives it all away.

This is a mossy leaf-tailed gecko, and my mind is just blown by this level of camouflage. It’s the kind of nature photography that makes you appreciate how much is going on in the world that we just don’t see. I learned they hang out on trees facing downward, partly to catch insects crawling up from the ground, but also to stop their eyes from reflecting light that might alert birds. It’s such a simple, brilliant survival tactic.

It’s just a great reminder of all the quiet, clever things happening in nature, hiding in plain sight.
