I came across this footage the other day and it completely stopped me in my tracks. You see a mother orca with a sea turtle, but she isn’t going for a quick kill. She’s spinning it, holding it under the water, dragging it by a flipper… and all the while, her calf is right there, watching every move.
Researchers who looked at this clip from the Gulf of California figure it’s a teaching moment. Not just ‘playing with food,’ but a real, practical lesson. It makes so much sense when you think about how orca calves stick so close to their mothers to learn everything they need to survive.
