I was scrolling online the other day and came across a video that just… wow. It completely stopped me in my tracks. It showed a spider that has engineered a spring-loaded trap out of its own silk. I’m not kidding. It waits for an ant to get close, and then the whole thing launches the ant into the web like a tiny, eight-legged catapult.
It’s called a ballista spider, and apparently, it’s a newly discovered species. I just can’t get over the ingenuity of it. Every time I think I have a decent handle on how the natural world works, I see something like this that reminds me how much incredible, bizarre stuff is happening all around us. Seeing this kind of thing documented makes me really appreciate the patience behind great nature photography and videography.
It’s just a little reminder of how much creativity and surprise is out there. Absolutely mind-blowing stuff.
